Students are more engaged in reading when they have the text in front of them. This award winning book is an excellent example of diversity and accepting cultural differences. Students are able to make real life connections to this book since they live in a similar area. This book is also a challenging book for my students as it goes above their reading level, but after reading the first two chapters aloud to them, it is a challenge they are willing to take. We will use this book on a daily basis in our reading class to support our unit on cultural diversity.
