This year I will be piloting social skills groups using Lego modeled from an evidence-based LEGO therapy program. These social skills groups will be facilitated by high school students from our nearby high school. As a team, the elementary students will work together to build LEGO kits with specific roles under the guidance of their high school team leader. High school students will be trained to facilitate the groups as well as model and prompt positive social interaction. My student’s at our school will be learning important and effective ways to communicate, problems solve, and develop relationships while working towards a common goal and having fun. The high school students will be developing leadership, planning, organization skills, as well as some patience. In addition, the high school students will be earning hours towards their service-learning requirement for graduation. Learning through play is an amazing way to engage children and develop their skills. I am so excited for my students!
