Students have a very hard time visualizing macromolecules like proteins and carbohydrates. They are required to know the building blocks of these and other macromolecules and generally get confused about what builds what. My plan is to label each mega block with the subunit of the macromolecule and have them build a protein, carbohydrate, lipid, or nucleic acid. Then students will see how we can test unknown substances to see if they contain any of the macromolecules by using the biochemistry kit. This hands-on approach will help students grasp the concept of these super important macromolecules.
