About 80% of the students in my school qualify for the Free Lunch Program. Many of my students are immigrants and come from lower income families. My school works hard to honor and celebrate our students' cultural differences and beliefs. My school not only focuses on academic rigor and excellence, but it also provides traditional folk arts classes that reflect the rich traditions of our students. For example, the school provides African drumming and dance, Indonesian dance, Hung Gar Kung Fu and lion dancing, spoken word poetry, step dance, Chinese opera, and many more folk arts classes. The school invests the time and energy to creating responsible and thoughtful young leaders. We hosts ritual events that allow students to celebrate community and teamwork. For example, every Spring students nominate and invite elders from their families and communities for a school-wide celebration. The elders spend the day providing valuable history and life skills to our students.
