Students at our school often come into my classroom without a love for reading. Our fourth grade cohort uses the Lucy Calkins program - an amazing hands on reading program - for independent reading and eventually book clubs for students. The program is differentiated and truly allows students to develop a love for reading. The most vital component of the program is to have a plethora of culturally relevant and engaging chapter books in both English and Spanish. I believe all my students are eager to learn and will get lost in a book when the text interests them. Currently, our classroom library is dominated by English texts. This doesn't support my amazing bilingual students to equally develop their literacy skills in Spanish. This project will allow more students to develop a love of reading and by doing so better prepare them for their educational career.
