More than half of my students are reluctant readers who read less than five minutes each day and score in the tenth percentile or lower in reading. My students struggle with letter sounds and comprehension because their reading fluency is poor. I watch their thirst for technology as they share the three computers we are fortunate to have in our classroom. While we are more fortunate than other schools, I still struggle to get my students excited about reading. For some, reading at their level means fourth or fifth grade level books. While my students have good hearts, they still are embarrassed about their reading level and would like to read what the other students are reading. It is heartbreaking to listen to a student struggle through a paragraph at grade level and then not know what he or she read because the fluency is just not there.
