Connecting Through Reading
Funded Aug 25, 2020Thank you for donating to my project, Connecting Through Reading. My students have thoroughly enjoyed reading the books with their classmates. We had a great time on the days that the books arrived. Some of my reading groups were able to open the boxes with me and share in that experience. The students have been excited to see the books again for our lessons.
I teach reading to students using the multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham approach. After the students learn a new sound, we read a book that contains that sound. The students listen for the sound as I read the book to them. After receiving the books, I now have a book to go with each of the initial sounds taught in the program. Having quality books available for my lessons has reduced my planning time.
The most popular book from the collection is Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. When they read this book, they feel like they are reading a real book and not a baby book. The students feel success and pride while reading it.
Another popular book has been Librarian on the Roof! by M.G. King. It was fun to read the book and then read articles about the real-life librarian. Even though I could not mail them in, I had my students write thank you notes to our donors for the books. One student wrote, "I read the Librarian on the Roof, and I survived!" Reading a book from start to finish is a big deal for a student when reading does not come easy.
I look forward to continuing to share these books with my students. Thank you for your support!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Stephenson
