My students want nothing more than to please the adults in their lives and hear us tell them how proud we are of them! Unfortunately they come from homes that are very chaotic. They are children of gang members, single moms and dads, parents in prison, foster children, refugees and homeless. My students have tremendous strength to live in this environment and come to school everyday with smiles and hugs for me, ready to do their best! Many don't have books in their homes or parents who fostered their brain development in their first few years of life. Many have a main communication style of "yell to be heard.." A calm, predictable environment is absolutely necessary for a traumatized child. My school has at least a couple severely traumatized children in each class and if they are not in the proper environment, they will make learning impossible for all!
