My students embody a variety of cultures including Native American, Marshallese, Latino, European, Asian, and African American. Despite their cultural differences, 85% of them also live in poverty; many of whom are first and second generation immigrants. The academic demands of the modern-day classroom for all my students are greater than they have ever been. More than 50% are struggling in literacy and in math, and need greater opportunities to encounter literature that supports math concepts. Very few of them are read to at home, and even fewer own quality books to read independently. Traditional read-alouds are beneficial to my students, but what would be really incredible is to allow our love of reading to instruct in math as well! Engaging, high-quality MATH picture books will bring these math concepts to life to further encourage cementing of the math instruction.
