My projects' goal is to give my 3rd through 5th grade students an engaging opportunity to apply the measurement and fraction solving skills they have been studying in class. My project will have students utilize free online 3D design software to layout their designs for fidget spinners. While our 3D printer was donated, we are in need of filament, bearings and hex nuts. The filament is the material the students will use to print their fidget spinner designs. The bearing are needed for the centerpiece of the fidget spinner. The last piece needed are hex nuts, which will act as counterweights on the spinner. What can be more inspiring for students to do their best with fractions and measurement in math than having the opportunity to use what they've learned to precisely design and build their very own unique fidget spinner from start to finish. This project addresses those equivalent fraction math skills my students struggle with. This project was very much inspired by APS's vision of a high-performing district where students love to learn. Providing engaging and hand-ons learning in mathematics is the key developing that love of learning math in students which in turn encourages family engagement and builds that trust every system wants from the community. This project is very much needed at my school. Mathematics is a significant portion of the state standardized test this year for 3rd through 5th grade, and fractions are a large portion of the mathematics section. This project requires students to precisely use those math skills. It is my hope to obtain the final material pieces we need for this project through the wonderful APS CLL Grow. Lead. Transform. Mini-Grant opportunity.
