These STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities help instill a love of learning and help students learn critical thinking skills. Studies show that STEM related career fields are growing faster than any other field, and it is important for elementary students to be taught these skills from the start of their school career. The hands-on, creative thinking, and problem solving skills transfer to all other academic areas, and help students become engaged and curious. The requested activities are specifically designed for 1st graders and to be engaging, hands-on, and to promote critical thinking skills. The STEM Science Stations complete set is the basic start up for a STEM program. During STEM, students are given materials, a team, and a set amount of time to solve a problem. With these kits, my students will be able to use them in a variety of ways, and practice their skills. For example, using the magnet kit, students can work together to get a mouse through a maze. In the motion kit, students can be given a challenge like, "How could you make this car go faster?" or "What could you do to make the cart go farther?" All of the activities come with additional pieces in different sizes to design a new car or cart. The engineering set provides materials for kids to design and build buildings, cars, planes, and more. The create a chain reaction set challenges students to plan, design, and test out different angles, ramps, and pendulums to create chain reactions. All materials allow for creativity, team work, and exploration.
