While textbooks do a great job of teaching basic historical facts, I think most people would agree that they do not get students excited about learning. They can be difficult to comprehend for struggling readers and tend to present information in a list-like fashion. My students have a difficult time connecting to our country's history through use of a textbook alone, which is where this project comes in. I plan to have my students participate in two engaging literature circles about the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War to enhance their learning experience. Historical novels offer students the exciting opportunity to travel in time and experience some of our history's most fascinating events through the eyes of characters who have a front row seat to all the action. The books I have chosen for these literature circles range in complexity and reading levels, so I will be able to meet each student at his or her level and increase overall comprehension of the material. These are high-interest titles that will motivate even the most disinterested of history students. The protagonists also vary in gender and social status, which will allow students to make connections to the characters and see the historical events from different perspectives. During these literature circles, students will read collaboratively and independently, complete comprehension and critical thinking activities, and participate in daily discussions with their peers. Students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the historical period while improving their fundamental reading skills and developing empathy for others.
