Elementary students are inquisitive and excited to learn! My students range from second through fifth grades and work through many project-based learning units throughout the school year. They are asked to inquire and research in-depth topics. While all are excited to learn about new topics, many struggle to sit in the typical classroom chair/desk setup. At times it can be distracting to other students when a student is shifting around their seat or pacing at their desk while researching. I always allow students to stand or sit on the ground, if needed, but those alternatives could be uncomfortable for longer periods of time. I believe that giving students access to choose their learning space and provide active dynamic seating will allow them to further concentrate on the topic at hand and increase cognitive function. Students of elementary ages are ready and willing to learn with a positive growth mindset. I am hopeful that allowing flexible seating in the classroom will not only increase engagement and attentiveness but also increase excitement in the classroom and school attendance.
