Most of the students at our high school come from low income and poverty homes. As a result, students often don't have materials like notebooks and calculators. Another challenge is, for a majority of the students, English is their second language. All communication with parents at home is done in at least 3 languages (English, Spanish and Hmong) and phone calls home typically require a translator. Despite these obstacles, my students are eager to learn. Many of my students are the first in their families to graduate high school and go to college. I constantly instill in my students the belief that education is their best opportunity to achieving the future they dream about.
