Students will role-play microbiologists working in a pathology labroatry for the health department. Each team will culture seven known bacterial types, and one unknown pathogen responsible for an bacterial outbreak in the community. Students will use a variety of agar media, each selective for a single bacterium, or a small group of bacteria. Based upon the results of the cultured organisms, students will work together as a team to try to identify the pathogen. Each team will work with a specific agar media and will culture and incubate each of the eight bacterial species. When the class compiles the collected observations and data, it should be possible to identify the pathogen.
