  • Engineering- Fresh Produce

    Funded Jan 7, 2018

Thank you so much for your thoughtful donations to my classrooms. Through your generosity, you have allowed my students to practice safety as they are improving upon their engineering skills. The supplies that we received through your donations has allowed my students to design and create their very own hydroponics system where they have grown fresh produce.

My students were excited and loved the supplies that they received and got straight to work building their hydroponics system. Within a week the system was designed and build. They have already started to grow fresh produce in the system and have been distributing it to the school as well.

This project was the start of the students taking part in making healthy choices. Our next project is to program micro-controllers to test the environment in our greenhouse. Students learn best when they take part in the creation process.

Thank you on behalf of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sahin

  • Safety First, Then Fun!

    Funded Oct 13, 2017

Thank you so much for your thoughtful donations to my classrooms. Through your generosity, you have allowed my students to practice safety as they are improving upon their engineering skills. The safety glasses that we received through your donations will allow my students to engage in activities were they can test their creations that allows them to propel and project objects across the room.

My students were excited and love their new resource of safety glasses that they now have. Their first expression was "those are the cool ones!" We do a lot of building and these are such an asset. Before anything students need to practice safe conditions and protect themselves.

We are about to start a project on creating a hydroponics system. We are looking forward to using the safety glasses. As we use power tools, to drill holes in plastic bottles and PVC piping. We will then use the hydroponic system to grow our own fresh produce that we can add to our school's menu. Students learn best when they take part in the creation process.

Thank you on behalf of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sahin

Our school serves 3,967 students from diverse backgrounds. The school population is comprised of 23% African American, 21% Hispanic, and 17% special education students. Females account for 58% of the enrolled students. Our school just started a pre-engineering class to expose the minority population to the engineering field. This program will provide our students, especially the underrepresented population, a curriculum that will expose them to math, science and engineering principles. The students will have the opportunity to learn more about the fields of engineering and to take part in it. By participating in the pre-engineering program, our students will be engaged in learning the engineering design process. Currently there are no engineering programs in any of the south Brooklyn high schools, this program will be the first in south Brooklyn at a high school with a diverse population. The material that we are requesting will help them learn the basics of building/designing projects. Through using the kits they will be engaged and challenged to solve the problems that are presented to them. They will explore a range of topics through hands-on activities and inquiry based learning. The kits has all the simple machines in it; this will help the students investigate how the machines work and think deeply about the concepts that offer us mechanical advantage that makes tasks easier and/or possible. These are skills that every engineering student needs. They need to know how tools work and how to balance how much work/effort a person puts and the work that needs to be done with the help of a machine. Some of our pre-engineering students are looking to be part of our award winning robotics club but are intimidated by building robots that require the understanding of simple machines since they have never worked with them.
