  • Pouring Is Fun!

    Funded Mar 23, 2022

Thank you to everyone who helped fulfill this project! This item was much needed during Covid so that the students could assist with cooking projects. Luckily even with Covid behind us, we will still be able to use this device to allow students who are limited physically to be able to participate in our cooking activities. There are many that cannot extend an arm to pour the oil in a mixture, there are some that are unable to grasp a handle to pour an amount into a bowl, and there are some who have to use their head to assist with the switch to pour an item into the recipe. So this device allows access to many students who would otherwise have to observe and not assist with our projects/meals. Thank you for always supporting our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Game, Set, Match

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

This project was pretty large and we got such amazing support from family and friends of our team. There were a few who contributed that did not have a connection and we are greatly appreciative. Your donation has enabled us to provide shade for our girls during our first few weeks of the season. If you are from SC, you know how important that can be when it's 90+ and very high humidity! The new tennis balls and hoppers are great for practicing and make us look like an organized team. Just last night I overheard a family commenting on how great it looks that the "water jugs even match".

Your donation is helping improve the skills of the girls on the team....but it is also contributing to the "affective" side of the team. We have matching outfits this year, equipment that improves practice, access to fluids, and the girls can chill under the tent. Now let's win STATE!!

But really, thank you to everyone who helped our girls out!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Time To Organize!

    Funded Sep 13, 2021

With your generous donation, the rolling chair makes it easier to work with our students and move freely around the room. Many of our students are in wheelchairs and standing over them feels awkward. They enjoy us working with them on their level!

The long cords allow us to keep using a device with the students even when their teacher forgets to charge it overnight :) We don't have to waste valuable time waiting for it to charge back up.

Finally, the organizing materials for our clothing unit is a big hit! We have been working on folding shirts and this is another step to increase the complexity of the task. I only wish my closet was as neat as our student's folding tasks when completed. Thank you again for always supporting my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Steps to Success!

    Funded Dec 30, 2019

Thank you very much for your generous donation to may class project. The devices that you helped purchase are used frequently throughout our students day. They allow our nonverbal students to greet others, answer questions, name the steps to a recipe and count out the items that they have assembled. Because they are used so much for communication, they tend to wear out over time. With your help, we now have three that we can use at stations around the room and will not have to worry about replacing for awhile. We are very grateful for your help!!”

  • Using My Voice!

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

Thank you so very much for your generous donation to my classroom project. I cannot begin to explain the difference it has made already for my students and for myself. I used to have to go to the Speech room to use their program and it was complicated. Now I am able to produce a "grid" in my room very quickly and easily. It is also updated to modify each grid to accommodate individual students needs which is great! We are using it already to tell the steps needed to follow a recipe, to count, to identify items we are sorting and for answering questions about a story we have read. The students love it and so do I!! Thank you again for supporting my classroom!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Working Hard in Daily Living!

    Funded Jul 9, 2019

The items that you provided are allowing my students to perform skills in an organized environment. We prepare a lunch for our staff to purchase every two weeks and we use lots of food supplies and cooking equipment. Many of the items that were purchased were items that are allowing our students to have a place to look for the items that they need to make something and then to be able to assist in cleaning up after the event with less direction. Because ultimately we want them to know where to go to get a food needed or a pan that is called for in a recipe. Independence is our GOAL!!”

  • Cardz and Things!

    Funded Jan 30, 2019

Thank you so very much for your donations! The Cricut machine and supplies have been put to good use by our students. We have recently had our only major fundraiser for the school (Run, Walk and Roll-5K). This is the first year we had the event here at the school. So we were really starting from scratch. Our students were able to assist in making signage for the 5K that made it look nice and neat. These signs will be able to be kept for the following years and not have to be remade each year. The kids were able to pick the colors used on the signs, they were able to assist in applying the vinyl to the boards, and inserting items into the machine.

We were also able to make our Thank You cards that we sent out by picking an object that we wanted, the color, and glued it on our card. We hope to start making packets of cards (Thank you, Get Well, Baby) to sell as a class fundraiser.

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Money, Money, Money!

    Funded Dec 25, 2018

What a nice surprise during the Christmas holidays to get the email that my project had been fully funded! The project you funded is being used in my Daily Living classroom here at Washington Center. We are a separate school with approximately 144 students with varying challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Our students require full to partial physical prompts to complete many daily living activities. Our facility tries to get our students out in the community frequently to experience a variety of tasks. Examples include shopping for groceries for cooking, bowling as a leisure activity, and making selections at a restaurant. The items provided in this project give our students a "hands on" experience that will prepare them for that trip out into the community. We want them to exchange money properly, identify individual bills/coins that they may need, and to carry a wallet/change purse like the other kids in their pocket when making a purchase. We are gratefully appreciative to you for your kind donation to our students!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Puzzles and Real Life Activities

    Funded May 9, 2018

Thank you so very much for always supporting the amazing students here at Washington Center. You have provided so many materials that we would otherwise be unable to purchase for our kids. Our students learn in a different way than most students. We try to give them fun ways to learn things like numbers, colors, animals, community helpers, and life skills. The kids loved the puzzles you donated! They were able to learn the names of some of tools that people out in the community use to fix things. They enjoyed the challenge of the "Around Town" puzzles that were more complicated that we are used to. It was neat to see the kids really "thinking" about where the pieces go. The fruit and veggies allowed the kids to use a play knife safely and let them cut them into smaller pieces. So we were able to not only cut them but we were able to count out the number of pieces we cut. We are also now able to save our Unique monthly units, our cooking visual recipes, and pictures of the kids on our external drive. Thank you for all you do!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

  • Welcome to the Seagull Grill!!

    Funded Apr 20, 2018

Each time we get a DonorsChoose grant funded it is a feeling of pure excitement! It is such a blessing that we are able to request items that will make each lesson that much better for our students....and they get funded. My daily living class is a very unique setting and the items that you help provide make it so much more "real" for my students. Many of these items we would never be able to incorporate into our class due to the cost. I am forever grateful to you for your kindness and love for my students.

    Thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. A.

This is a separate school that serves students ages 3 to 21 with severe intellectual disabilities. Many of these students have concurrent challenges such as autism, blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities. Families find it difficult to take the children out into the community once they have returned home from school due to transportation of wheelchairs and behaviors. Our focus is to provide opportunities for students to explore and develop independent functioning by addressing students' individual needs. Through home, school and community involvement, we create an educational environment to maximize student success. Being the Daily Living teacher, I am fortunate to see all 144 students each week. Many students require hand over hand assistance to complete an activity and most are non-verbal.
