I work at a full-service charter school--not only do we teach students, we connect with families. It's a community. Our students get healthy meals, dental and hearing checks, and counseling, among other things. Many of our students have experienced more trauma than any person should have to, let alone a 7 year old child. They are wise beyond their years and have experienced too much pain in their short lives. But, at the end of the day, they are still children who love to play, laugh, sing, dance, and learn. Their curiosity can not be contained and their smiles are contagious. For many of the students, school is the safest, most consistent thing in their lives. They know that inside my classroom and inside our school they are safe. They know they will be pushed and supported to reach high expectations, and they know that there are many people who truly know them as individuals.
