  • Love and Logic Behavior Management for Student Success

    Funded Apr 2, 2024

I wanted to thank you. Love and Logic has improved my interactions with students in ways that amaze me. Love and Logic is a researched based program that gives classroom teacher new ways to interact with dysregulated students. When students are acting from their amygdala, teachers are powerless to help the students recover their calmness and composure.

Love and Logic is a PD program that helps both us teachers and students in so many everyday challenging situations. After going through the nine essential skills, teaching has become so much easier. During covid, dysregulated student behavior went to new heights and saw many teachers leave the profession or retire. When I wrote this grant, I was trying to find a new way.

So thank you for giving me new tools that have made my teaching life and the lives of my students better. This donation is still paying premiums and will continue as I renew and refresh my career well into my second decade.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Merrikin

  • It's a Small, Small World!

    Funded Jul 9, 2024

The students are thoroughly enjoying the digital camera microscopes. Most recently we were looking at hornets. I had a dead nest with some residents who had died while at home. They were embedded in the nest. Thanks to your donation we were able to view them up close. That includes their legs, wings, compound eyes, and abdomen. We also have gathered different plants to look at roots, leaves and stems. The students were thrilled to see such structures up close!

The joy is palpable getting to observe things up close! Thank you for being part of this project!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Merrikin

  • Help us Regrow our Horticulture Program

    Funded Dec 16, 2024

Thank you so much for your thoughtfil support. Our horticulture program has been on pause so it's going to take awhile to bring it back online.

The students are super motivated and excited to do the work. I am grateful that you are a partner on this journey. I can't wait to start an herb container garden. The planting supplies will be used in the classroom to give every student a chance for hands-on horticulture!”

    With gratitude,

  • Classroom Upgrades for Equity

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

Brightening my old (55 years) windowless science lab that has not seen a fresh coat of paint or upgrade in many years is really appreciated. The printer will allow us to print in the classroom rather than having to walk to another building at a different time. And color feels like a needless luxury but when you teach in an underresourced school, this is what you come to except- there simply are not enough resources to go around. I sincerely thank you from my spirit to yours.”

  • End of the Year Solar Car Race Day

    Funded Dec 4, 2023

The solar rate car project is a a huge hit. There are kits that you buy and one kit can last me 4 years because I am very economical and careful with the supplies. I guess being from an underresourced school I have learned to make do.

Giving to my project so each class can have their own kit is a tremendous step forward. With four kits, I will be good for a long time!

Solar is an important part of our clean energy future. Teaching students with these projects not only teaches about clean energy it teaches them about how cars work.

Here are some photos of students enjoying the project.”

  • Coloring Tools for Visual and Kinesthetic Learning

    Funded Jan 6, 2024

These materials are not necessarily exciting or innovative. Instead these materials are items that help make class more equitable every day for my students. None of my students bring their own supplies nor does my underresourced school supply them. Each day they take out the highlighters, colored pencils, markers, and other items and it adds to their experience in such a subtle way they may not notice. But that's exactly what I want because these students do not automatically have these items. I know and I am so grateful for your generosity so please accept my deepest thank you.”

  • People Power Inspiring Wind Power

    Funded Dec 4, 2023

I want to sincerely thank you for this generous donation. We used these books on the lead up to our renewable energy project unit. My students were so thrilled, curious and enthusiastic to learn about the story of a real person who was changed the life of his entire community using science and technology he had learned in books!

First, the students previewed the book and wrote anticipation questions about what they thought it might be about. Next they chose sections of text that they found interesting and worked in small reading groups sharing their chosen preview. Each day as we read together they completed a summary and reflection journal.

This book inspired their creativity and curiosity in so many ways”

  • Giving Students a View Into Another World

    Funded Oct 23, 2023

This project was excellent. The students had never used microscopes in K-8 so it was a novel experience getting to drive the microscope. What was more exciting is when they got to view protists. Without microscopes, they can only view videos or see pictures on Google but so many kids were yelling out "OOH! I See it! That's so neat!" And "You guys you have to look at this!! (everyone rushed over)" The excitement over some tiny protists was palpable. Being able to expose them to things in this world that they could not directly experience or see is so precious.

A few algae, amoebas, hydras can launch their imagination and inspire them. So many smiles and delight when they finally get the hang of the microscope and the samples come into view.

I know many will remember this for the rest of their lives!! So thank you for helping them have these experiences. God Bless you for your generosity and thoughtfulness!”

  • Make Tests and Quizzes Feel Like Fun!

    Funded Sep 7, 2023

Just yesterday my students were working on studying the unit vocabulary during an instructor-led session on Quizizz. It can be so difficult to engage poor readers in any task relating to learning vocabulary but in all honesty without a command of the words, the learning will only be surface level. But yesterday, in class, every single student was engaged, they were competing with one another and were really trying to learn.

What I really love about Quizizz is how it makes it fun for students to learn - it literally gamifies a challenging task. I love the many types of questions and the visuals that are so important for both English Language Learners and Moderate Special Ed Students. The reporting and data also inform my instruction in a variety of ways. Quizizz reports show me where I need to reteach or add to what I am doing with learners individually in class.

Its going to be another great year in Ms Merrikin's science classroom thanks to your generosity!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Merrikin

  • Teaching and Learning Always Go Hand in Hand

    Funded Jul 27, 2022

Thank you for funding this project. Because of your generosity, I was able to deepen my teaching practice through the resources purchased in this project. In particular, I wanted to deepen my use of Inquiry Science and Differentiation strategies.

The Teaching Channel had a ton of resources for NGSS inquiry science standards. It included videos showing teachers implementing different strategies with their classes along with reflection questions and resources. There is nothing better for improving teaching than watching other teachers teaching!!

Additionally, the 1-year membership to ASCD gave me access to a huge PD library with authors who are experts in lots of subfields. I was able to get a ton of great resources on differentiation strategies including free books and lesson plans.

These resources are financially out of my reach otherwise so I want to really thank you for giving me a year's professional development. This year in my class, I am doing way more differentiation with my classes along with inquiry-based science.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Merrikin

My science classroom is a place where all my students have opportunities to learn, think critically, be creative, and be themselves. I teach using every available idea and method to help capture their interest and imagination. Most of my students come from backgrounds of disadvantage (economic or social). They don't really have a vision of the "outside" wider world in a positive sense. As their teacher, I see my role as someone helping them to see the personal power and choices they have. It is my job to help them to access this. Science is ever changing. I teach Environmental Sciences to freshman and seniors. Teaching them about our natural environment, water, air and ecosystems is really key to our future. I see each one as a light that I can send out to help spread the word and change our world for the better.
