  • Fresh Start for a New Year

    Funded Aug 4, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting me and my students with your generous donations. I can't wait to see their faces when they open their brand new supplies. My students will be so happy when they see these fresh new supplies on the first day of school. I appreciate your kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dudley

  • A Comfy Seat

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

My students love their comfy seats! They love the beautiful, fun colors. They most enjoy the fact that the seats are low and comfortable, so they can socialize in the library. Their regular table and chairs are large and hard to sit on for a long time.

These materials have made an impact because the library area is now a bright, comfortable and relaxing place to chill out with a book. There are a few strong readers in our class, but all of the children love to go to the library to "read".

Within the next few weeks, we will be teaching the children to shop for books that they can put in their book baggy. They will have time throughout the day to grab their book baggy, a comfy chair and read. A comfortable environment makes reading more fun.

Thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • Curl Up On The Rug With A Good Book

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

My students love their beautiful new rug. When I unveiled it, they were so happy that they had a clean, quiet place to read in the library. They love to ask "can I go read" when they finish their work. That was the impact that I was hoping for.

As young children who are still learning to read, I wanted them to have an inviting space to explore books. They love to sit with a buddy and read. Even if that means "reading" the pictures.

Now that they have a beautiful rug, our next step is to start teaching them how to shop for books that are appropriate and interesting. We will make time to read on a daily basis to increase their fluency.

Thank you so much for your donations and your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dudley

  • Read Every Day

    Funded Dec 29, 2017

Thank you so much for your donation. It has truly helped bring literacy to some of the students in my classroom. Prior to your donation, I had several students who were not making progress with reading independently. They were not doing their reading homework and I was not sure why. I finally realized that some of them did not have books at home.

My school has a large population of English language learners. Many of these children do not speak English at home with their parents. Some of their parents work very long hours. In addition, they do not speak English. So it was very difficult for some of these children to be escorted to a library to take out books. Without this donation, they were not reading at all outside of the classroom.

The lending library is a wonderful solution. The books are on their level, and students are motivated to read. It is also a wonderful assessment tool for me because I can assess comprehension and fluency with the books that they take home. The students feel like they have a special bag of books that they can read at home for a week. When they bring them back, they have to read to me and I can see if there has been any improvement in their reading. For some there has been an improvement in this short period of time.

I cannot say again how much I appreciate this donation. It is making a difference in the lives of my students. They are learning how special books are and they feel special because they have special books that they can take home.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dudley

  • Everyone Has a Story to Tell

    Funded Feb 9, 2017

This donation has made such a difference in our classroom. The children were so excited when the box arrived. As I said in my request, we were running low on everything. We needed pencils, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, pencil pouches and a classroom sharpener.

The first thing that I did was make sure everyone had a pencil pouch with their name on it and 3 sharpened pencils and an eraser. This saved us so much time in the morning. Prior to this donation, I wasted a lot of instructional time in the morning looking for pencils, sharpening pencils and settling disputes about pencils. Now that each child has their own pencil pouch, the morning pencil craziness is over! I routinely sharpen the pencils so children are never without at least two sharpened pencils.

The children have written two how-to books since we received their supplies. They take pride in coloring their pictures. Their work is nicely displayed on our exterior and interior bulletin boards. Everyone colors their pictures now even the two or three that didn't like to color. We are currently working on a fairy tale. I can't wait to see the pictures that accompany their writing.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dudley

  • We Love to Read, Read, Read!

    Funded Dec 16, 2016

My students shouted and jumped up and down when the books arrived! They were so excited to see me open up those boxes and pull out brand new books. Our classroom is across from the main office, so every time I saw a delivery person walk by I would ask "Is that for us?" One day the delivery person said yes.

My students love to read with a buddy even if they can't read all of the words. They have learned so many new facts from the pictures alone. After reading, they share new facts with their tablemates. The boys love the sports books and they all love reading the animal and community helper books.

I am so grateful that my first graders got the opportunity to handle new books. Their knowledge about real people, places and things is increasing every day. They love to read, read, read. Reading is one of our favorite times of the day. This donation puts the icing on the cake.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dudley

My students will have a nice selection of non-fiction books on their level to choose from. Building a love for books and reading should occur in the early grades. Many of my students were struggling readers in September but now that they are starting to read more proficiently, they need books. By the time these books arrive, they will be excited whenever they get the opportunity to shop for books in our classroom library. Right now, our selection of books is not that great. Some of the books are torn and damaged. My students need Scholastic News and to see new, fresh books that are not being held together by tape.
