INeed to help my Students Learn From Home With IPads!
Funded Oct 13, 2020The IPads have been invaluable in the classroom! The children use the IPads to go on many different websites to learn their basic skills in fun ways. We have an ICT classroom this year, which means that students who have special needs learn right along with general education students. Some children learn the concepts we teach as soon as we teach them. The process is fairly easy for them. For many others, learning is a struggle.
The apps on the IPad has helped some of these strugglers, especially a few that are too shy to ask for help. First of all, they make learning fun! Children can engage with material on the apps and not even realize they are learning. Starfall.com helps children learn by watching videos that integrate the sounds. For instance, the letter g has a video of a gorilla playing a guitar. Other ways we use the IPads are to watch videos by Jack Hartman. He is a gifted entertainer that has countless amounts of engaging, fun videos that teach reading skills, as well as math, science and social emotional concepts. We also use the program Imagine Learning, which helps our English Language Learners improve their English. In short, your gift of the IPads has put many a smile on the children's faces, while increasing their brainpower and self confidence!”

Give the Gift of Great Read Alouds!
Funded Apr 25, 2019I received the book Ada's Violin The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay. We watched a video about the real Recycled Orchestra after reading the book. We made puppets from recycled materials. We had a few vocabulary lessons with descriptive words that author uses to enrich the story- stinking, sweltering. We listened to the music mentioned in the story- the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The majority of my students are Hispanic, and they loved hearing the many words in Spanish throughout the story. We also discussed what the orchestra had to to do in order to play well together- "be kind, always say please and thank you, say you're sorry, be dedicated when you commit to something". We talked about how if you practice and work hard at something, like Ada did in the story, you can achieve anything in life.
The books L is for Liberty and A is for America fit right in with my Presidents and American Symbols.
The book We Are Growing! by Laurie Keller was the perfect addition to my collection of Mo Willems books. My students loved reading these books in pairs after listening the to them. Thank you so much for the gift of great books!”

Mrs. Russell
