Problem Solving through Cubing!
Funded Apr 19, 2017Thank you so much for your quick impact on this project. When I brought the new cubes I bought over Spring Break to school today, the students were excited and jumped right into solving. I mentioned this project to them and they were hopeful and amazed that people outside the school care and believe in the work we do inside my classroom.
Again, thanks so much for inspiring these kids!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Hans
Help Promote the Chess Club!
Funded Dec 14, 2016Thank you so much for thoughtful gift to the FDR Chess Club, which I can now say has evolved into the FDR Chess Team. With the increased number of boards and with the addition of game clocks, students have been able to practice more, sharpen their skills, and most importantly build their confidence.
Due to this, some students approached me asking to join a tournament run by Chess in the Schools. Five students competed in our first tournament appearance and did an amazing job. As a team, we took first place earning 15 of a possible 16 points. Individually, three students won trophies for being undefeated; winning first, third and fourth place (link to the results page: http://chessintheschools.org/s/index.cfm?aid=1931 , 20K505 is us). The pure joy of that day and the pride they had in themselves for doing so well was priceless.
The chess team will continue to grow as we plan to join another tournament next month; in which we will enter two teams (a rated and an unrated team). Again, we thank you for your help and encouragement!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Hans
