My students attend a Title I school with 90% free and reduced lunch and 93% minority students. We are a Focus school which means that we have low achievement in Math and Reading. In an attempt to achieve more success in Reading our school has switched to a reading workshop model which allows us the framework to meet the needs of all of our students no matter what reading level that they are at. In this model students are given an opportunity to grow as readers by reading books at the levels that they are at. My students love being able to choose the books that they want to read believe giving them choice gets them more excited about reading. They can't wait to check out new books and they don't groan when I announce independent reading time. However, recent budget constraints and the local economy have limited my ability to provide the necessary resources to support this model.
