Computers and Science are the Future
Funded May 22, 2019Thank you so much for your generous donations towards this project. My students have been so excited about having computers just to be used in science class since the moment I told them that I put a DonorsChoose.org project together. One student was so excited that she blurted this out during class, "We no longer have to put our names on a list to borrow the school computer cart." Teaching science involves students having the opportunities to do labs. Unfortunately with limited supplies and time it is often hard to do actual labs. The computers from this project will allow all 165 of my 7th grade science students to do virtual labs in class. Computers are the future and I am so happy that DonorsChoose.org was ability t help me bring my classroom to the future.
Upon arrival of the computers, the students could not wait to get the computers out of the boxes and onto their desks. They felt very fortunate to have access to the Internet during class time. We now are able to go to interactive websites to learn, play games, watch videos and do labs when we want to without having to wait for a computer cart to be available. The computers have enhance the knowledge of my students tremendously. The enjoy coming to class knowing that they will not just be copying notes but learning through student led discussions and activities that are computer based.
Currently, my students are using the computers to explore the digestive system. Before this we used the computers to explore all the other systems of the human body. The computers have allowed the students to delve deeper into the inner workings of their bodies. They have had the ability to do various virtual labs, watch videos clips, and just do research to help them get a more complete picture on the topic.
The whole process of DonorsChoose.org was easy to use and I look forward to putting together more projects for my classes in the future. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for having given us this experience.”

Ms. Weisser

Funded Feb 7, 2019I wanted you to hear from one of my students the impact your donations have had for my classroom.
Your incredibly generous donation to Ms. Weisser's Donors Choose project for more computers has enhanced our science class in a variety of ways. First, having computers of our own to use eliminated so much unnecessary time-wasting, as getting school computers to use for a day requires being given a specific day to use the computers whether that day is convenient or not because another department needs them for more important reasons. However, no one can take these Donors Choose computers away, they are only for Ms. Weisser's students to use.
Second, in Ms. Weisser's classroom we complete lab activities involving stations that let us learn about a topic at hand in a much more hands-on way than notes and worksheets. Although, some terms are unfamiliar to us while we try to complete the lab, especially if the topic has just begun. This is where our computers come in! They allow us to look up information that is missing or unclear at each station, so that we can comprehend the required knowledge. This teaches us to find what we are looking for ourselves, as opposed to relying on a teacher.
Third, the computers in our classroom allow us to review the day before a test using an online game called Quizizz. The aspect of coming in first place kicks in everyone's competitiveness, pushing us to study to get as many questions right as possible. Overall, these Donors Choose computers are a huge part of our learning experience, and thanks to your donation, we can achieve our learning dreams.
Thank you again for the generous support for my students.”

Virtual Labs in a Science Classroom
Funded Mar 3, 2019I wanted you to hear how your generous donations have impacted my classroom straight from one of my students.
I would like to thank you for helping Mrs. Weisser's students to get fabulous new computers for our classroom. The computers assist in our learning, and we thank you for being kind and generous and helping us in expanding our knowledge in science. The computers are awesome because they quickly allow us to find any information we need that's not provided in our old, out-of-date textbooks. Our textbooks are really old and sometimes when we are assigned a task or project, all the information needed is not provided in our textbooks. With the computers, we are quickly and easily able to find the information. You have helped our class move forward into the 21st century by donating money to give us helpful computers.
In our science class, we have virtual labs. So instead of Mrs. Weisser and the students having to buy materials every time we want to do a lab, we have them right on the computers! This makes it so much easier because if we don't finish a lab in class, students can go home and complete the labs since they all have computers. That's so much easier than waiting until the next day to set up a lab (if we didn't have the computers). The online labs are fun, creative, and easy to complete. Just recently, we had a lab on the respiratory system. It would be hard to have an actually hands-on-lab on the respiratory system since we can't pull our lungs out and look at them. The computers are efficient, fast, and helpful.
Another thing that the computers help with is test preparation. There are two websites we like to use for studying, and those are Quizizz and Kahoot! These websites are a sort of game where its a competition of who can get the most points on a question, who can get the highest on the leader board, and who can answer the question faster. It's so fun for us as students to do, we look forward to it, and it helps us to study because we keep restarting the game so we can win! The games are so much fun and we don't even know it, but we're taking in knowledge for our test. This method is so much better than sitting around reading a boring, outdated textbook. Thank you again for your generosity and for your thoughtfulness. My classmates and I, and Ms. Weisser, appreciate it so very much.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Weisser

Funded Feb 7, 2019I wanted you to hear directly from a student on the impact replacing my Smart board projector had for my students.
After our previous projector stopped working one day, it was extremely hard to note-take properly with the tiny surface areas of the chalkboard and posters that made up our classroom's makeshift Smart board. Being a child with bad vision, daily learning became a struggle in class, as I could not copy my notes without the hassle of squinting and moving and asking friends for their notebooks.
However, once we got a brand new projector, our Smart board was back in business and our lessons were just as fun and exciting as they once were. Thanks to the projector's ability to reflect our science teacher's computer screen onto the Smart board, we could finally breeze through note-taking and get to more fun activities! For instance, Ms. Weisser was able to play informational song parodies daily that engaged the entire class. We all of a sudden were singing along and mentally creating pathways for learning without even knowing it! Additionally, our latest science project was to make our own song parodies in small groups relating to a chosen body system, to eventually be displayed for the entire class to see. With our new projector, the class was thankfully able to spend a fun few class periods watching our fellow students sing to us about bones, muscles, the heart, the lungs and more!
Thanks again for always helping my students to succeed.”

Ms. Weisser

This classroom project was brought to life by Con Edison and 8 other donors.Help us Print our Resources!
Funded Dec 17, 2014Thank you so much for your very generous donation towards this project. My students have been so very excited to be able to make brochures, matching games, and individual copies of worksheets (that they can write on rather than share) since the moment I told them that I put a DonorsChoose.org project together. This year I had the pleasure of having 159 wonderful young 7th grade scientists. They love to get their hands messy in science experiments. With every unit of study, their understanding of the world around them sparks engaging discussions and debates of science. The materials from this project were no different. We researched elements and made informational brochures, created matching games for physical & chemical changes of matter, and many lab experiments with each unit are just a few of the ways we have used the printer from your donation.
Upon arrival of the new printer students were intrigued and excited to print out in color the various projects that we do in class. They were very impressed by the high quality of the pictures the new printer can make. They felt very fortunate to have such a wonderful resource right in their classroom, they knew that students with other 7th grade teachers were not going to have the same experience. We brainstormed and decided that those students should be able use such wonderful pictures and games as well. They were very generous and wanted to share this resource with their other classmates.
The whole process of DonorsChoose.org was easy to use, and I look forward to putting together more projects for my classes in the future. We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for having given us this wonderful resource.”
