  • Literacy in Science

    Funded Oct 22, 2024

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your generous donation to my classroom project. I was in awe of how quickly I was able to reach my goal. The books arrived within two weeks of posting my project.

I was interested in this project as a way to improve academic literacy for my students. My students range in ability, from English language learners in regular chemistry, to advanced AP chemistry students. I recently learned that very few college students have the literacy skills needed to succeed. That inspired this project. Now, when students finish work early in class, they grab a book. There is a wide variety of topics and reading levels across the books, so there is something for everyone. Some of my more reluctant readers gravitate toward the books that have more pictures and diagrams, but interpreting these still helps develop valuable skills, and still exposes students to scientific concepts.

Additionally, some of the book that emphasize graphics are useful more universally in instruction. I made photocopies of the most relevant components so that all students use them in order to learn some of the more challenging chemistry concepts. Visual support and memorable cartoons help students master the material. I have shared these resources with colleagues as well, so your donation has impacted far more students and staff than initially projected.

Thank you again for your kindness. I am so proud of my chemistry book selection, and my students are really benefitting from it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Drummond

  • Promoting Equity through Yoga and Meditation

    Funded Feb 2, 2021

Thank you for your generous contribution to my Donors Choose fundraiser so that I can participate in the Breathe 4 Change 200-hour yoga teacher training and SEL certificate program. It is an 8-month long program so I am nowhere near finished, but I have already gotten so much out of the experience in the month since it began.

I have already begun incorporating some of the things I learned in the classroom, such as some breathing and mindfulness exercises to reduce stress. Next school year we should be fully in-person again, and I am really looking forward to incorporating these techniques on a regular basis. I also look forward to starting an after school yoga club at my school once my training is complete.

Thank you again for your support! This experience has already helped me personally and it will definitely have a ripple effect throughout my classroom, school, and community.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Drummond

I envision using what I learn in district-wide workshops for staff and students to benefit the entire community. Our district as a whole consists of nearly 10,000 students, all from similar disadvantaged backgrounds. I want to host either a before or after school yoga class regularly for students and staff. I will eventually teach a yoga/mindfulness workshop during study hall that students may attend. In order to do this, I must complete this training to be certified. There is abundant evidence that mindfulness techniques reduce the school-to-prison pipeline for lower-income minority students, improves grades, increases graduation rates, reduces negative outcomes of stress, and helps English language learners (ELLs) develop their academic language skills. Through this professional development, I will learn specific techniques to help my students with their mental health and become a certified yoga instructor with an additional emphasis on social emotional learning (SEL). I will use what I learn on a regular basis in the classroom to help my students manage stress and strengthen their coping mechanisms. In addition to promoting a general well-being in this community, there are many positive long-term implications for students who are historically neglected by society. This is an opportunity to achieve more equitable educational outcomes for the community.
