  • Billion Oyster Project

    Funded Feb 9, 2016

    I am writing this to express my heart felt gratitude, as well as that of my students and entire school community for your generosity. With your donation I was able to purchase extra water quality monitoring supplies to help support the Billion Oyster Project that we are a part of. This project allows my students to partake in a authentic restoration project, along with real scientists and other members of our local and regional community to reintroduce oysters into NY Harbor. These oysters, which are filter feeders (1 oyster can filter 50 gallons of water every day), will hopefully assist in improving the water quality of the harbor, making it safer for more uses as time progresses. Most importantly, this project reminds my students, at a time where most of the education system is centered on testing, testing, testing, that the real value of education (especially science), is to learn how that knowledge can be used for a greater good.”

My students are a passionate and ethnically diverse group of 8th grade children, who get very excited when they learn about new ways that science does and will impact their lives. They remind me of a match just before it strikes a matchbook. Often they just need that hand to connect them igniting a fire that could last indefinitely. My school is an extremely nurturing place where the staff does whatever is possible to give our students the resources and guidance that will allow them to discover their world and give themselves to it wholeheartedly.

About my class
