Do you remember your very favorite book from second grade? Was it The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein? Charlotte's Web by E.B. White? I'm going to bet it was NOT your second grade science textbook! Integrating amazing children's literature with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, also known as STEM, offers me a unique way to bring exciting, engaging, 21st century problem solving skills to my students. Each lesson will allow students to engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate a problem and will integrate both a fiction and nonfiction book that centers around a topic like robotics, architecture, communication, or animals.
