  • Keeping in the Know With Scholastic News!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

I want to express my sincerest gratitude for your kindness. The Scholastic News magazine that you helped to fund provides such engaging material for my students. There are so many different ways that skills are addressed. I often use them for practice with written responses and finding evidence. Locating the main idea, summarizing the text and exposure to strong vocabulary are also skills that I regularly hit with instruction using the weekly articles.

Within our fourth grade classroom the Scholastic News articles are distributed weekly in various ways. Sometimes the are passed out in small groups and we work on the text together. There are some weeks are students are given the opportunity to collaborate with peers and read the articles together. Also, some one-on-one support is available with high level engaging text and work on answering the questions that go along with the nonfiction articles. The possibilities are endless!

My students enjoy the topics from the magazines, they feel that they are relevant to them. Example: talking about apps and internet safety, drones, video games, endangered animals and healthy food were among the top rated articles we've read to date. To me this allows my students to connect more with the text. They enjoy the videos that go along with each magazine as well. I had a specific student comment that they most enjoyed the colors and graphics and that they can take them home to share with their families.

Again, I am truly appreciative of your support for my fabulous 4th graders!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Midiri

  • Keeping in the Know With Scholastic News!

    Funded Sep 27, 2021

I'm truly grateful for the Scholastic News articles we now have available as a resource in our classroom. My students love keeping up on current events in the world. The first magazine we worked on as a class was an article about creating new emojis (so relevant to them) and they were so engaged and the discussion we had was phenomenal! They didn't realize that they got to actually keep the magazine and take it home with them to share and that was so cool to see their excitement. We try and read 2 Scholastic News magazines per month and they are looking forward to these days. I know that having the rich nonfiction content is such a crucial piece to enhance learning. I appreciate your support to bring such a wonderful resource to our school.”

    With gratitude,

  • Flexing Our Minds in Flexible Seats!

    Funded Sep 5, 2021

Thank you, thank you for your generosity! My students absolutely LOVE the flexible seating we have in our classroom now. We utilize them as often as we can. The first day they arrived my students were so surprised for something new that they get to utilize regularly. I know my students look forward to independent reading time and the different seating options they have. Just recently students used them when we did a literature circle (sitting on the wobble stools) and they thought it was so cool to be able to use a clipboard and stool instead of a traditional chair. The little things that we can do to make the school day fun are a win in my book! We've also started using the flexible seating while we do math centers. Having this choice is something they look forward to and enjoy each and every day. I'm so thankful for all the support to help bring some new and exciting seating opportunities in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Midiri

After this trying pandemic year, this project will provide different options to make transitioning back into a traditional classroom setting a bit easier. Half of all students in my district were fully remote last year. Consequently, they had been learning in more flexible physical environments at home. Now that we are back to full in person learning, many students might struggle with the need to fidget and not being used to sitting in formal desks and chairs. This project provides yoga ball chairs and wobble seats for movement while working. Students will be able to sit in a variety of seats that allow easy movement to help them learn in a fun and flexible way.
