After experimenting with many schedule models, our school incorporated an intensive Ceramics humanities course and nothing was more exciting! All of the students have become so enamored when they see the works on display and want to experience the class for themselves. When students hear that we are about to use clay, the overwhelming response is always "YAY!" The joy that our students have when they are handed their clay is contagious. Whether using the pinch method, slab building or just having fun manipulating and bringing an idea to life, the students have so much interest and strive to challenge themselves. The potter's wheel is the most basic tool for the potter, and aside from the kiln, the most expensive piece of equipment in a classroom. Being able to incorporate a pottery wheel for each of our two art rooms will allow the students to further develop their ideas, interests and skills and encourage their excitement of creating with clay! Many students will never have an opportunity to use a pottery wheel again, but they will have obtained self confidence, developed problem solving skills, experienced the Zen-like calm and focus of using a wheel, and will own a lifetime appreciation for the potter's craft.
