Inside of our Special Education classroom, each student comes with their own unique strengths and needs. One thing over the years that I have learned, all kids like to eat! Reading is commonly the most weakest area and my students often become hard to reach once they have figured out it isn’t coming easy to them. They will often shut down, not try their best, or become upset when having to participate in reading programs that significantly improve their reading skills. I’ve incorporated snacks into our reading program that is called “snack-n-chats”. After we finish our story we have snacks while we “chat” about the story (using our comprehension/written response piece). Students now BEG to come to the snack-n-chat table and understand the rules to get the snack! Also, I have students on behavior intervention plans and often snacks are incorporated into this to encourage and reward positive behavior and to motivate students. Snacks have GREATLY improved the motivation and eagerness to learn in my classroom & we both win (my kids have full bellies & I have students significantly improving in their academics/behavior). *Also, some snacks (such as granola bars) will be saved for students who may be late to school and didn’t have breakfast at home.
