Many of my students who are struggling readers often feel defeated when they see the "large" books with small print, but they want to read them. Many of my struggling readers are second language learners and students who have reading disabilities. They do not often get to feel successful with reading. By hooking my struggling or reluctant readers on a couple of good books, it can give them the success and encouragement they need to grow as readers and bring them closer to being able to read the longer, more popular books they see their peers reading. These books are a good bridge to making that happen.
