Today, we are all inundated by screens. Even in classrooms, screens dominate students' time. We use technology to disseminate information, to increase engagement, and to track student progress. Students need a break from screens, but for that to happen, they need a compelling reason to not think about their streaks or who they are following on Instagram. With books like Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bones or Neil DeGrasse Tyson's Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, I hope to give students the compelling reason they need to step into other worlds and push their understanding of the world around them. All the books selected for this project are written by people of color. It is of utmost importance that my students see that people who look like them and can relate to their experiences developed writing that can enthrall them.
