My school has an "at risk" population, but doesn't qualify for Title I funding. We are in between a general population that can afford to buy a book or two for English class and a school that can afford to buy books. My students make me proud. They think, they connect, they share, they laugh. However, many admit that they hate to read (Unless it's a tweet or a text). I have successfully engaged my students with more modern, high-interest books, and have had a few who have actually joined the school's book club (YAY!) and others who regularly borrow books from my personal classroom library. High-interest reading material that fits the curriculum is essential, especially when assigning an independent novel project that will include a culminating honors-level class activity (I want my students to pursue a higher education). I tell my students that they must read to succeed! Please help me help my students discover the joy of reading!
