Many of my 7th and 8th graders, at our inner city school, have had a rough upbringing. Many of my students are, or have been homeless at some point. Most of my students do not have both parents in the home and several don't live with either biological parent. I have students who are gang members and have been in trouble with the law. My students don't have access to engaging books and therefore are very reluctant readers. Most read below their grade level and these books span the varying levels in my classes.
