Inclusive Literacy
Funded Dec 4, 2021Thank you so much for your contribution to this project! The books have been delivered, labeled, and placed on the shelves of the classes involved! The best day was when students returned from the holiday break to a huge box of new books. We spent time reviewing each title and deciding what genre it belongs with on our classroom bookshelf. We chose one book, "A Long Walk to Water" to read as a class during our read aloud. The rest of the novels are currently in the hands of students, with some having a waitlist.
We have been using the picture books to practice reading skills like theme, text features, and character development. These books have beautiful, engaging story lines and wonderful themes. Students are making connections across books and asking really important questions about their reading. Many of these books have great vocabulary that has helped with our study of domain and academic words across subjects.
I have a very diverse class and everyone now has a variety of books to choose from who's main character "looks like them". They have similar cultural backgrounds and family traditions as many of the main characters and are really enjoying the books.
I can see a change in some of my readers. They are more excited for independent reading time and can't wait to talk about their books with their friends.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. McQueen
