  • Time For Kids

    Funded Jan 16, 2016

The bookbinder has been used to create "Learning Logs." In order to assist in improving the students reading comprehension, students are participating in Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). This program has learning logs for each time the students read collaboratively. I bound these logs for each student. This has assisted in keeping all their work in one place for them to review and learn from. They see their grades and they can look back for reference. The students love these bounded learning logs and truly appreciate being organized and cared for.

Although we have only received one issue of Time For Kids, the students love the graphics, visuals and photographs. They are excited about receiving them weekly in September. They were totally interested in the articles and the beginner ELL's appreciated that although they couldn't read all the words they understood the gist from the photos. Students also appreciated having the colored pencils to enhance the drawings they made to show comprehension.

We are now studying poetry and students are writing their own poems based on a real world poems they can relate to. We will be using the colored pencils to decorate the covers of the poetry books students will be creating and then bind with the binding machine.

I can't thank you enough for your generosity and sense of humanity for these children. I don't have resources so all this has truly come in handy.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Diglio

My students are Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Albanian. As of last week, I got three students from Spain and two from China with no knowledge of the English language. My students are 6th - 8th graders coming to this country with no English. In addition to being ELL's, I have at least 20 students with special education learning issues, as well as behavior problems. My goal is to engage all students to keep them on task. My beginners are the hardest; I have started putting them on the computer to learn simple English, as well as prepare separate lessons in English and their home language to help them make connections to the language. I work at a Title I school. The school is 50% Hispanic, 40% African American, and the rest is mixed. All students qualify for free lunch. Everyone works hard at my school, but I lack sufficient books to support the ELL population I teach.
