  • For the Love of Reading

    Funded Jun 28, 2016

Thanks a bunch for all of the support.

I can pretty much guarantee my kids reading levels will go up because of the books you all provided. They'll hopefully learn to love reading and will carry that love throughout their lives.

Really appreciate all of the support and help, especially from Frank.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Fleming

  • Child Labor Unit

    Funded Feb 27, 2015

I want to thank you all for providing us the resources to actively engage in our Child Labor Unit. My students really enjoyed connecting to the main character Lakshmi. Through the novel, my students were able to identify direct and indirect characterization. They were able to identify theme and outline the child labor process. My students still reference Sold, referencing it when they are connecting to our current unit, Romeo and Juliet. It is an accomplishment to have a full class reading every day, and that is what this book did for us.

My students were often gasping and yearning to read aloud while we were studying our Child Labor Unit. They loved reading the novel and often asked why we did not read "cool books like Sold" for the entire year. My students told me they appreciated being able to take the books home with them to read independently and for homework. For our culminating project, my students appreciated being able to search the novel for lines that related to understanding how/why child labor functions.

Again, thank you for all the support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Fleming

I teach eighth grade English at Spring Creek Community School in Brooklyn, New York. My school is a very high needs school with 100% student population receiving free lunch and free metrocards. Engagement is tough for some of my students and a very relatable unit will help them connect with other people's experiences and will help them engage in social justice issues. Eventually, their interest in reading and literacy will help promote a need to reflect and change the environment and community they come from. My students love talking about issues related to injustice and love talking about issues that promote positive change.
