At my school we begin differentiating instruction in second grade, so my classroom is designated to all English Language Arts instructional blocks. I have two classes of nineteen students. Within each class students are grouped by reading ability. When I assess reading ability I look for several things: accuracy (# of words correct), fluency (# of words read correctly per minute), oral comprehension (a conversation about the text that demonstrates understanding), and written comprehension (answering a question about the text to show understanding). My students need CD players with headphones in order to utilize a reading intervention program called Read Naturally. This program will help struggling readers at any reading level to improve in the following areas: fluency, accuracy, and written comprehension. Fluency is the largest area of concern in my classroom and it is in the primary target of this intervention. Students complete activities in the Read Naturally program at their own pace. The program is structured and requires students to listen to the story being read to them (and read along with it) 3 times in a row. I currently have one CD player in my classroom. Due to the self-paced nature of the program, I am able to have two students using the program in each class. I need ten CD players so that I can provide access to every student as a rotation in their independent work time.
