  • Classroom Glow Up

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you so much for your contributions to our classroom. My students were absolutely stoked when we started receiving the packages for the items we ordered. The snacks were almost immediately gone, but now without great appreciation. The chargers were put to use right away and continue to be popular throughout all my classes. I have a very large advisory class with several new students. The excitement around ordering and receiving these items was a great bonding experience.

The decor you purchased for us is actually probably the longest lasting gift. The twinkle lights and greenery has really transformed the look and feel in the classroom. It's hard to capture in photos but the room is much more comfortable and chill and it is a place lots of students like to be. During advisory, a time when many students skip or go hang out with friends, our classroom swells, and my already full class (most advisories are more like 15 or 20 students) doubles the size of a normal advisory.

Thank you for your support in creating a school space that is more welcoming and pleasant for us all.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Williams

  • Even the Walls Teach

    Funded Nov 20, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous donation toward our world map wall decal. My students were absolutely blown away when we first put it up. I noticed right away that it would be difficult to clean if defaced (I'm working on a solution to that), but the students are so impressed by the map, and like it so much, that after three months I still have not had any problems with it (truly shocking).

So far the map has been very helpful as we jump into projects. My class is a world history based humanities class, which means knowledge of geography is very important. When we started the Industrial Revolution, we searched up the invention dates and countries of significant machines. We put post-it notes on the map of where the machines were created and it quickly gave a clear visual of where the Industrial Revolution began, and which countries it expanded to first. For our most recent project, Imperialism, the map has been pivotal in illustrating the spread of European Colonialism in Africa. I have been able to use the map to quickly highlight the difference between North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and in showing the relationship between African countries and their European colonizers.

Next we will be heading into WWI. It was this project last year that made me realize how crucial geographic literacy is to my curriculum. The alliances and military strategies formed before WWI are geography dependent and I ended up resorting to crudely drawn maps on my whiteboard. The map you purchased for me will allow me to draw the students into the actual lines of the region.

Overall your purchase has drastically increased student interest in these topics. Our geographic inquiries regularly lead to further questioning and a deeper understanding of the content. Thank you so much for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Williams

My students are culturally diverse almost entirely minority students, many of whom struggle to find food for breakfast every morning. They are intelligent, diligent students who thirst for responsibility over their own education. They are brilliant entrepreneurs who know our city better than I ever will, and they are geographically illiterate. They know that what is happening around the world affects them, but they get lost in how it fits together. Many of my students come from places like Somalia and Cambodia and Vietnam. They know these places intimately but they struggle to see how they fit in to the world at large, they struggle to see how that world connects to the world right in front of them.
