Science Materials We Would Love to Read
Funded Nov 1, 2019Due to your generosity our class is able to engage in science reading and instruction on a daily basis. We are able to access leveled texts and all students, including English Language Learners can enjoy the interesting articles on a range of science topics.
The online components allow us to do shared readings on the Smart board and view the complimentary videos that accompany the articles. Students can reread and listen to the articles online with their parents at home. This improves parent engagement.
The supplementary reading activities and teacher's guide provided by the program allows the students to enrich and reinforce their reading skills, which in turn they can apply to their independent reading and to other contain areas. My class is growing in their reading capabilities thanks to your support.
Thank you again for enriching the learning experiences of my students.”

Ms. Engel

Funded Nov 16, 2018Your assistance in funding Story Works Magazine has enriched the reading experience in my fifth grade classroom. This magazine provides exposure to many different genres and provides multiple opportunities for students to learn and enhance all of their reading and writing skills. They learn to conduct CLOSE reading of texts, improve their vocabulary, learn the skills of inference, drawing conclusions, sequencing and summarizing. They respond to the texts in many different ways and through many different modalities.
The students can access the texts at their own reading level, because Story Works provides leveled versions of each text, as well as, English Language Learner support.
Additionally, there are also multi-media connections provided and audio versions of each story. This allows for differentiation for remedial students and enrichment for advanced readers. All students are able to feel success as readers.
The students enjoy receiving the colorful engaging magazines and look forward to reading them. They treasure their copies and I am so pleased with their progress as readers. This is due, in no small part, to Story Works Magazine.”

Funded Aug 26, 2018Many thanks for your generous donation to our class project "Just the Basics". Your generosity you has enabled the students to complete many academic and artistic tasks within the classroom.
The copy paper, both white and colored, is used daily to provide the resources for most of our programs, including math, writing, reading, social studies, debate and science. Being able to replicate resources to differentiate curriculum, allows me to reach students at their level. This enables them to experience success, no matter what their academic level.
The chart paper purchased, has allowed students to create group projects. It has also allowed me to create anchor charts to display within the classroom, supporting my students learning in all areas.
The other classroom materials, organizing bins, notebooks, folders, pencil sharpener, erasers, pens and pencils allows each student to start each day prepared and ready to tackle the academic tasks they will encounter.
Although these items may not seem major, it is the "little things" like these that allow students to learn without hindrance. They are always prepared for class and for this I thank you.”

Funded Jan 16, 2017Thank you for your generous support for my classroom project. The students were completely thrilled and excited when the were presented with the art materials. The enthusiasm they exhibited as they delved into the unopened box of art pencils, was only surpassed by the pride they displayed in their completed art pieces.
The students take great care of these materials and have used them to create illustrations to accompany their writing pieces and poetry. They have been used to create Celtic Stained Glass designs for St. Patrick's Day, Valentines for Valentines Day and posters for Earth Day. We have created "Explorer Trading Cards" depicting famous European Explorers and original brochures, describing how to take of our teeth.
Thank you again for your generous support and for helping my blossoming artists to create works of art that they will remember and treasure far beyond elementary school!”

Liberty and Justice for All: Debate Club Program
Funded Dec 15, 2015Thank you for your generous support of our Debate Program Project!
Students speaking and reasoning skills were enhanced through the debate program. Students learned to evaluate situations, take a position, and support that decision with valid, concrete reasons. They learned about laws and how to interpret laws without emotion, or personal opinion. They learned how to play "Devils Advocate" and argue a point, even if they did not personally support that idea.
Confidence levels grew, as students became comfortable talking in front of groups of others. Students learned proper etiquette and how to speak without emotion. Analytical thinking and reasoning skills were enhanced as students were challenged to think "outside of the box". The debate program enhanced our persuasive writing unit, as students were challenged to use prompts to develop a claim, and "hard" versus "soft" reasons to support their positions and persuade others to join their side.
Students who participated in the Debate competition, had the opportunity to present their arguments to a panel of lawyers and law students, who judged them on various predetermined criteria. Students were thrilled to visit the CUNY School of Law and to meet other students, as well as lawyers and judges. This supported College and Career connections aligned with the Common Core Standards. Most importantly, students had fun, grew their confidence and honed skills that will follow them onward through their academic careers.
Thank you all for your support for this very important project!

Elementary Arts and Social Studies Integration
Funded Sep 1, 2015Now that the school year is underway, and the students and I have gotten to know each other better, we have been able to begin our Social Studies and Art Integration unit. The students were in awe of the book making materials we received, which will allow them to become published authors.
We are looking forward to progressing through our Social Studies units and using the art supplies to create our own visual representations of historic events. At this time, we have finished a unit on Geography and the students will be creating their own interpretations of Pangia, as well as, physical and political maps. These projects have enhanced student engagement, with a topic that some students once perceived as "boring".
After studying about primary sources, we will begin a unit on Explorers. Students will create a visual representation depicting a specific moment in the history of exploration, as if they were present. They will become the creators of their own "primary source".
Thank you again for your kind generosity and please know that you have made the learning of 28 fifth graders more rewarding this year.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Engel
