My students live in an area where there is a high poverty/crime rate. Most of my students live in public housing and do not get a lot of experiences other than school. Some of my students have never been to our local mall. Although they are eager to learn, they often do not come to school with the things they need to learn. Most of my students lack school supplies and needed clothes because their parents do not have the income to purchase the items they need. Sadly, the breakfast and lunch they eat at school may be the only meal they eat that day until they come back to school the next morning. Our teachers try to nurture and help our students perform to the best of their ability by reinforcing positive behaviors and encouraging them to do their best on a daily basis.
