Throughout first semester, we explore questions related to whether we can ever reach absolute truth and certainty through perception, language, and memory as ways of knowing. We examine how these ways of knowing can be manipulated by those in power, but we also explore how our own experiences, beliefs, and values can shape our perception, language, and memory. Margaret Atwoodś The Handmaidś Tale is the culmination of the unit after reading Nathaniel Hawthorneś The Scarlet Letter and George Orwellś 1984 in addition to non-fiction essays. The novel ties together many of the ideas and themes introduced in these texts but adds a postmodern perspective on truth. An example of this postmodernist perspective is the main characterś continual revision of her narrative and memories. In addition, we examine how the oppressive fundamentalist government in power has manipulated and played upon history to gain legitimacy. Students participate in provocative discussions, build their literary analysis skills, and explore topics of interest through individual oral presentations.
