PROJECT PAWS: Dogs helping students overcome challenges
Funded Mar 30, 2015September 2015
Dear Donors,
Thank you for your generous donations to "The Fair Shake for Youth" dog therapy program. The program was a tremendous success and has helped to transform my "underdog" middle school students into "top dogs." My students not only learned about how to interact with, work with, and train dogs, but they learned many new things about themselves and each other. For many of these middle school students it was the first time they experienced trust, unconditional friendship, patience, and real teamwork. Several students expressed that they would like to pursue a career working with dogs. The most valuable lesson my students learned as a result of working with the dogs and their field trip to the ASPCA is the importance of empathy and compassion in relationships. Many of the dogs they worked with were emotionally and/or physically abused and were given second chances by their current dog parents. The dogs taught my students to be kind, to trust, to love, and to never, ever give up, no matter what. Many students reported feeling connected to their canine companion, more self-confident, and in general, felt more positive about school. I am "pawsitive" that your donations allowed this incredible program in my school and that you have touched the lives of New York City students in a positive and productive manner.
Sincerely,
Kathy Critharis”
