Environmental STEM Materials
Funded Oct 23, 2017Thank you so much for donating to my project! The main purpose of the materials I requested was to collect caterpillars from our butterfly garden that get eaten by birds and lizards. Little did I know that we would be affected by Hurricane Irma which wiped out the entire garden! Fortunately I was able to request funds and also received donations of native butterfly plants from a nearby university (Florida International University). We rebuilt our garden with the help of parents and students in December. We were so happy to see the garden alive and flourishing again! As a matter of fact, we were able to use the materials sooner than I expected. There was a cold front coming through that would drop the temperature to the mid 40s which is deadly for the caterpillars. We began collecting several monarch caterpillars and placed them in the net "nurseries", we used the plastic tubes to place cuttings of the milkweed for them to eat. My students were able to save at least 20 caterpillars that would not have survived the night thanks to your generous donations.
The other materials that I requested were for a worm bin and aquaponics sytems. We will be working on these projects after February. However, the students did get to take a peek at the items when we were opening boxes and I must say their faces lit up with excitement. They asked several questions and wanted to know when we would begin the projects.
Receiving donations like these have really impacted my students in a positive way. Not only do they get to see upcoming projects, but they are so impressed by people donating to our project that don't even know us or even live in the same state. I am truly grateful that DonorsChoose exists and that there kind people who take the time to look through the projects and donate. Saying thank you does not seem adequate enough of an expression. I hope you know that because of your donations students are not only learning with hands on materials but they are becoming better citizens who are concerned about the environment. So, think of it this way, you are making a big impact on these students and hopefully they will make big (positive) impacts on the environment and for a better future!”

STEM Lab Supplies
Funded Oct 13, 2015Thank you for the STEM supplies! My students were so excited to see the materials arrive. As we opened the boxes they were chattering about how "cool" their STEM lab is going to be now. They were as happy as kids on Christmas morning. I want to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you! It was eye opening to hear that many of my students had never seen a microscope or graduated cylinder in real life! I know that because of your donation these students will continue on the path toward a career in STEM. We are so excited to get started using the new supplies.”
With gratitude,
