When young people see themselves in literature, it makes reading more relevant. One of my students recently read "Dear Martin" by Nic Stone in two days. She hurried back to my classroom and begged me for more books just like it. I became a teacher to expand the realm of possibilities for my students. Culturally and topically relevant literature will help make that happen. While this project is just the beginning of an effort to fill my classroom with books my kids will love, I am hoping to get a full class set of "Dear Martin" and "Why We Can't Wait."
