Young children enjoy listening to stories. When children have books read to them it stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It also helps them develop language and listening skills. When children listen to well-told stories it can fill the vocabulary gap for those students who haven’t been exposed to a rich array of words over their lives (Flanagan, KQED News). Children's early phonological awareness is a strong predictor of a child's early reading achievement (Morris, 1993). A listening center will allow my students to listen to stories and follow along in the accompanying book. Children must have ample opportunities to apply phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge in a real language context that involves speaking, listening, reading and writing (Invernizzi & Tortorelli, 2013).
