Technology for Literacy!

Funded Dec 20, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous contribution. Although we have some computers at our school it can be difficult for them to be managed, as we do not have a designated staff member to do so. Because of this, it can often be very difficult to get computers in the classroom on a regular basis. Having these 5 computers allows me to provide their benefit regularly.

Now, I wish I could say we are using these computers for amazing new things, but currently we are using them to improve our reading and writing skills. However, to me, an English Special Education teacher, this is most amazing thing! Since receiving the computers we have used them in three ways on a regular basis. One way is for two newly arrived students who didn't have any English at their disposal. We have been able to create curriculum for them to assist them in grasping beginner English by using Duolingo on the Chrome books. The students created accounts and work during specific classes during the school day. They are moving along pretty rapidly, and I think the use of Duolingo on the Chrome books has played a major role in that progress.

The other way we have been using the Chrome books is for the students who receive intense special education services to support them with their independent reading by pairing their independent reading book with the Audible version online. Students listen to the Audible version while reading along, and this helps the students stay on track, and aids in their comprehension because the readings are lively and help the text come alive.

The final way we have been regularly using the computers is with our writing assignments. Using Google docs students have been able to more easily engage in their extended writing assignments. It makes it much easier for me to review their writing which means more time spent with each student, and it makes it much easier for students to revise their writing.

In conclusion, it's 2017 and my students need and benefit greatly from technology that every adult already uses daily. Using programs such as Duolingo, Audible, and Google docs provide teachers with a way to differentiate student assignments and engage students more. In short, computers in the classroom are essential tools, and I can't thank you enough for helping us begin to reach that goal. It has certainly made a huge difference in my classroom.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Connors
