  Room 217 would like to express our sincere gratitude to you for your thoughtful donations. Your generosity has enabled us to unlock our creativity in ways that we could not previously imagine. Having access to a powerful Mac Mini has been very valuable to our classroom. It has provided students with new avenues to share their unique perspectives and talents. We have already created short educational films that capture not only our knowledge, but a sampling of our imaginations. We have also used the power of the Mac Mini to create original songs and lyrics that share our discoveries in a musical manner.

  It is our hope that these fantastic tools continue to motivate us. These tools that you have provided grant us meaningful educational experiences that will serve us well for years to come.

  Teaching students to harness the power of technology is of paramount importance as an educator. We are preparing them for a rapidly changing world in which information lies only a quick click away. Giving them meaningful experience with technological tools and embedding their use in their daily lessons allow them a comfort level that can open up a world of possibility. However, technology is never the lesson. It is merely a tool that enhances the learning experience for our students and it is important to equip them with the best tools available.

  Granting access for my students to the cameras allows them the opportunity to capture their unique perspectives in powerful ways. The images that they compose using these tools end up being a reflection of their individual viewpoint. They can tell stories through their private lens. I believe in validating student perspective and having these tools allows me to facilitate that goal inside the classroom on a daily basis. Having the powerful MacBook allows students experience with cutting edge technology that can help transform their learning experience. Specifically, students will have access to the same hardware that professional journalists use in their professions. With this tool they are able to share their knowledge digitally in a creative and engaging fashion.

  Several students have become very adept at using the Nikon. They enjoy the superior images that it is able to capture. There is a group that I meet with twice a week during lunch. They are currently producing a music album. They have written the lyrics and are utilizing the cameras and the MacBooks to compose the music and to film/edit a documentary about the album making process. The tools have proven to be truly transformational catalysts that have aided our experience deeply.”

• Capturing the Learning Moment: Digital Imaging Center

  Thanks to your generous donations, our Digital Imaging Center has been a fantastic success. Having the camera and color laser printer has helped us in many ways. The image quality of the camera has allowed us to post vivid daily updates to our classroom website, Portkey 217. This website is not only informative as an essential communication tool, it has served as an incredible motivation tool. Students strive to post their work on the blog. They cannot wait to communicate what they learned and are always anxious to share their knowledge. Having such a quality camera with wifi capabilities has eased the process for posting their magnificent work.

  Having access to high-speed, low cost color printing has been an enormous benefit to our classroom. We can now print our work in full color economically. We recently used this color printer to help advertise our immensely successful class production of Fear Fest 4.44 in 4D. This event was a classroom presentation of kid created spooky stories. It was a collection of literary talent that manifested in multiple ways. They created songs, poems, dances, stories, skits and short films to demonstrate their amazing literary skills. The camera and the laser printer enhanced this experience not only for the students in the class, but for all of the audience members who attended. All 2nd through 8th grade students attended. Plus, all parents and family members of the fourth grade class were invited to attend the final performance. It was a smashing success.

  As an educator, I am humbled and genuinely grateful for the generous support that this project has received. I am confident that your donations will continue to serve my students in immeasurable ways. These tools have unlocked creative pathways for my students and have allowed them to share their talents in surprising ways. Thank you all for your investment in us.
