The Wonderful World of Worms!

Funded Feb 6, 2024

"I used to think that worms were slimy and gross. Now I think that they are awesome and really help the soil!" - a third grader.

Thanks to your donations, we have the opportunity to learn all about these helpful creatures in a hands-on way. Each day we check on them to see how the food is changing into humus right before our eyes.

The day that the worms were delivered, we gathered on the carpet around the worm bin and placed roughly 500 worms into the bin. The students were full of excitement. They were all into it! There were squeals of excitement and even some EWWWs, but they were hooked.

In preparation of the the worms arriving, I sent home a brown bag with each student to collect food scraps. We talked about what scraps would be good for us to use in the bin (we didn't want anything too smelly). The kids collected food scraps and brought them in and we buried it under the bedding in the worm bin.

Now they check the bin to see what the worms are up to and what the food looks like. The students have written persuasive paragraphs to convince people that worms are awesome. They've tried to name all 500 worms. I'm pretty sure all of them have student names or super hero names. Each time they check the worms, they swear that they know which one is which.

Through this project, the students have learned that all organisms have a place in the ecosystem and they are important. The students understand how organisms are dependent on each other. One student even told me that they found a worm after it rained last week and they told their friend not to kill it because it has a job to do in the soil.

I can not thank you enough for your donation and support! My classroom is full of excitement and wonder because of your help.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Flanigan
