  • Chromebooks to Engage Students in Next Generation Science

    Funded Nov 6, 2017

My students come from high poverty situations in which technology is not available or only available in a limited capacity. To be able to provide my students with access to digital learning platforms is a tremendous gift. By donating these Chromebooks, my students are now able to participate in a wealth of science simulations that were previously inaccessible to them. Your donation has helped to level the educational playing field.

For the first time, they have ready access to computers and are not only engaging with science simulations but are also coming to my class to work on other digital learning problems. There enthusiasm is contagious, and engagement has significantly increased. In particular, my ELL students are now able to get immediate translation of content and have begun to delve deeper into science content.

Thank you again for your generous donation. You have significantly impacted my students for the better and improved their educational opportunities in a dynamic and meaningful way.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Bogart

  • Lifting Digital Literacy

    Funded Aug 23, 2015

Thank you for your donation to my classroom project, Lifting Digital Literacy. Your contributions have allowed my ELL students to explore science in a more meaningful way. They are very excited to use the computers not only in class for learning assignments but also during their study hall time and after school to complete assignments and further explore science topics. The students are very happy and truly appreciate your donation. Meaningful learning has increased dramatically since the arrival of the computers and student digital literacy has improved as well. Students are learning how to search effectively for research reports, are exploring science videos, animations and are using drop and drag functions in virtual science laboratory simulations. Access to digital resources is crucial for 21st century science skills and your contributions are helping to level the playing field for my ELL students.”

    With gratitude,

  • Reading about Real World Science!

    Funded Nov 20, 2014

My students were thrilled with the Scholastic Science World subscription. The students were asked to find any article of interest to read and then they will create a "book report" in the form of a Prezi presentation to present their article to the class. The subscription is perfect for my ELL students because articles have a wide range of topics and vary in length and difficulty. Everyone was able to find a topic of interest and appropriate reading level. This improved engagement 100%. Our school wide goal of reading and writing across the disciplines was received with enthusiasm because the students were able to discover topics of interest to them.

I heard squeals of delight when students saw the panda article and many oohs and aahs when they found the articles on insect bots and bed bugs. One student mentioned to her friend, "I really like this, I want to read more like this." There were smiles all around the room! Today was a joyful teaching day for all.

Students will be presenting their Prezi reports after the holiday and everyone is very interested in creating the best and most exciting presentation. Most have already begun learning how to upload information and photos into Prezi before we have even begun the second part of the project. Students are taking initiative and working to their fullest capacity.”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Bogart

I teach approximately 90 ELL students in bilingual Biology and Chemistry classes in one of the largest high schools in Connecticut, which is also in a high poverty area. There are over 40 different languages spoken in our extremely diverse school and all students are required to pass Biology and Chemistry to graduate. Students are very eager to learn science and to improve their academic and communicative language skills, and they come to class excited to experiment and investigate. I teach using a combination of visuals, models, hands-on materials, project-based learning, and my own materials that I have adapted to make them more accessible to my students.
